Get Started Now!

Probably the most common question I get while teaching classes is “How did I get started?” The answer to this question is interesting only if you get the lesson connected with it. The answer… I did a reading, followed by another and another, and before I knew it most of 30 years had flown by. Now I don’t want you to hear my answer as flip or dismissive of the question; I got started by starting. The work of developing your psychic abilities is a journey and not a destination, however it is a journey that many want to take but simply don’t. Again, this isn’t meant to be judgmental, it’s simply my observation after meeting many people who desire to develop their intuitive skills.
“Hey, I’ve taken a class or two!” someone out there is thinking. “And I’ve read many books on the subject” another voice will chime in. I am not discounting classes or books in the least… heck I teach two development classes here in Denver. For me, the “doing” is worth a thousand books or a hundred classes. Think of it this way, books and classes are like MapQuest. If you’re not familiar with MapQuest, it is a free service that will give you turn by turn directions from the start to the end of your trip. Once your destination information is input, MapQuest prints you out a colorful map and directions. It’s brilliant. But what often looks straight forward on paper isn’t always so in life. The actual journey will involve many unforeseen twists and turns with road closures, weather hazards, detours, missing street signs, etc. I use MapQuest, I love MapQuest, but it is my guide for the journey ahead, not the journey itself.
“So where do I start?” That’s a fair question. You start by listening to your guidance. If you feel moved to give a message during a Spiritualist Church service, then you give the message. You may just get a feeling about something, make a note about that feeling, especially if it turns out to be correct. If Spirit speaks to you through your dreams, buy a small journal and set it next to your bed each night. Maybe you are drawn to read cards or use a pendulum, then get a set of cards or a pendulum and get started. Read for yourself and for friends. I don’t know anyone who won’t want a free practice reading. You may actually be starting to build a clientele doing practice readings as well.
I believe part of the challenge for folks new on the path, and even the not so new, is the stories we tell ourselves. Recently a student had a huge breakthrough during my development class. He called me a few days later and said about his experience in class “weird, huh?” His psychic breakthrough had been distilled down into a “Weird, huh?” experience. I offered him an alternative. Why not accept the incident for what it was, “you were clearly tuned-in to someone psychically in that moment”.
We seek out these experiences, and then when a bona fide experience happens, we laugh it off or dismiss it. This becomes a function of the Law of Attraction. If we honestly claim it for what it is… being psychically tuned-in, in the case of my student, it cements in the idea that I CAN be tuned in, if even for a moment. This belief is HUGE because it will begin to build on itself creating more and more “tuned-in” experiences. If the experience takes another path and becomes a “Weird, huh?” story, it cements the idea that the ability to connect with another energetically is a fluke, something not controllable. As you begin down the path, or at any point really, claim your experiences honestly. Like in so many other areas of life, success will build on success.
And finally, I teach my students this simple principle over and over “Just give the message”. Your gifts, for the most part, lay undiscovered. Make a new year's resolution to get on the path, exercise your ‘psychic’ muscle and watch all the changes that happen as your gifts become apparent and available to you and everyone around you.
