February 2010- Psychic Development Tip

by Rev Charles Cox

The Truth Is NOT Out There

Who we are never changes. Who we think we are does.
-Mary S Almanac

In the television show The X Files, the show’s catch phrase was ‘The Truth Is Out There’. And, though it may be true for aliens and conspiracy theories, it can be a misleading assumption when pursuing one’s spiritual path. I think it has to be some kind of cosmic practical joke that God hides our deepest connections with Spirit in a place that few of us are willing to look… inside ourselves. There have certainly been plenty of prophets throughout history who have alluded to this fact. Plato’s advice was short and to the point “Know Thyself”. But what does that mean, really? Could it be that Plato understood that our true point of power is within our own being? He didn’t suggest we get to know a bunch of people, or read a shelf of books… he said Know Thyself. Luke 17:21 reads “Neither shall they say, See here! or, see there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” The verse suggests that looking here and there will not lead to the discovery of the gifts of the Spirit that so many of us desire. In fact, the pursuit itself can be a distraction if we are looking for Spirit in all the wrong places. This may be the greatest discovery that one can have in this life. Taking a few moments to discuss where to look may be helpful.

I can honestly say that for many of my adult years I suffered from a condition; I have no idea if it has a name but I believe that it is common to many of our lives. I got up each morning and went out into the world believing that I was on the outside and that some unknown group of people were “The Insiders”. Now I never bothered myself with How they become the insiders or even Who they were. I just found myself looking in from, what felt to me, was the outside. I felt alone, separate and separated. This is a powerful belief that many people I know have struggled with; this idea that someone, some group or something has the keys to happiness, love, joy in their possession. I realized one day that there was no great group, or no private club trying to keep ME out; if anything, I discovered, there is a wonderful group waiting for me to join-in.

I mention this because developing your spiritual awareness means having to heal some things, many of which are your beliefs about developing your spiritual awareness. First off, Spirit is NOT playing a game of Hide N’ Seek with you. Your experience of hit and miss connections speaks more to your training than to your true abilities. In truth, Spirit is waiting quietly for you to discover, strengthen and reaffirm your connections to it. Awakening your spiritual and intuitive gifts is much like a child who is learning to walk. Imagine after a few shaky steps that you simply sat down and said “Walking just isn’t for me” not out of anger or a desire for pity but a soul level resolution… “Obviously, God doesn’t want me to walk”. Silly, huh?

A visitor to New York City asked a local man “Say, how do you get to Carnegie Hall?” The local man smiled and said “Practice, Practice, Practice”. The key to expanding your spiritual awareness is practice. Find a time each day, or each week that you spend developing your connections. Spirit will lead you to the type of practice that is right for you. You may meditate, work with a pendulum or a deck of tarot cards, or gaze into a crystal ball. There is no correct path, except the path of 'practice'. Whatever direction in which you are lead, I know that in a very short time, you will begin to see yourself differently because you have taken time to discover the Kingdom within. The truth of you is not waiting to be discovered “out there” somewhere, it lies within you… waiting to be discovered by you. With each step of self-discovery comes even greater levels of spiritual and psychic awareness which builds your self confidence to continue down the path of spiritual discovery.
